The story
In the quiet Vogtland region of Auerbach, Renoir brings a refined approach to classic cuisine. Chef and owner André Baldauf runs the kitchen with a philosophy of "kreative, klassische und frische Küche" – creative, classic, and fresh. The restaurant earned a Michelin Recommended distinction for 2026, a nod to its consistent quality and thoughtful cooking.
The menu changes with the seasons, but the current offering showcases Baldauf’s skill with both land and sea. A five-course menu might begin with rolled rosé veal filet paired with wasabi crème and a small Waldorf salad, followed by a mango-coconut curry soup with lobster ravioli. The main course of grilled lamb rack comes with Barolojus, confited cherry tomatoes, ratatouille, and beluga lentils. Dessert is a bourbon vanilla panna cotta with tonka bean tuile and braised apple compote. For those who prefer à la carte, starters include caramelized goat cheese with cassis figs, Parma ham, and cantaloupe melon, or house-cured fjord salmon with marinated wild prawn and potato rösti. Fish lovers can choose gratinated zander fillet with shrimp hollandaise, while meat options feature a "Saltimbocca" of Spanish pork fillet and rosé veal filet with sautéed mushrooms and fresh Périgord truffle. A vegetarian option of homemade pappardelle with fresh truffle is also available.
The wine cellar focuses on European growers, with a strong selection from Germany and France. The sommelier offers a curated wine pairing for each menu, with three to five glasses available. The list includes rare finds from Saxony and Saale-Unstrut, as well as classics from Burgundy and Bordeaux.
The dining room is understated and comfortable, the kind of place where the food speaks without pretension. Service is attentive but unhurried, allowing guests to enjoy the full experience. Renoir is open Thursday through Saturday evenings and Sunday lunch. Reservations are recommended.
