The story
Marktwirtschaft Besigheim sits on the historic Marktplatz in the heart of Besigheim’s old town, a place where centuries-old timber framing meets contemporary dining. The restaurant describes itself as a cross between a restaurant and a modern bistro, with a relaxed yet stylish atmosphere. The guiding principle is straightforward: “The product is the focus. No fuss, no frills – it must taste good, and the simple must be done well.” This commitment to honest, seasonal cooking has earned the restaurant a Michelin Recommended distinction for 2026.
Frank Land, who opened Marktwirtschaft in May 2016, grew up in a traditional inn and trained at prestigious kitchens including the Berlin Adlon, Kempinski, and the MS Europa. In 2024, he was joined by Sebastian Maier, a chef who started his career as a restaurant specialist with a cooking qualification and later worked at the Ritz-Carlton Wolfsburg and the Bayerischer Hof in Munich. Together, they bring a wealth of experience to the kitchen, guided by the belief that “good food starts with good ingredients.”
The menu changes with the seasons, drawing on a network of regional partners: Demeter producers, local butchers, and nearby wineries such as the Felsengartenkellerei Besigheim and Weingut Dautel. Lunch is served Monday to Friday, and the terrace offers a pleasant spot for coffee, cake, or a glass of wine. The restaurant also hosts themed culinary evenings and private events. The atmosphere is described as down-to-earth and warm – a place where you can come for a full meal or simply a drink and an espresso.
