The story
Strandperle Wintergarten in Cuxhaven builds its reputation on regional North Sea cuisine, anchoring its dining room along the Duhner Strand promenade. The conservatory itself dates to 1995, designed as a bright ground floor extension for morning coffee through evening meals. This transparent setting earned two spoons from the Schlemmer Atlas, recognizing how the architecture supports the kitchen’s daily output. Guests sit directly above the sand, watching the tide shift while waiting for their plates.
The kitchen draws its ingredients from the nearby waters, preparing fresh fish and shellfish using straightforward techniques that highlight natural brine. Local catches typically rest beside seasonal vegetables, followed by a finish drawn from French pastry traditions. These French-inspired desserts appear regularly on the evening menu, offering a structured contrast to the simpler coastal cooking. The guide noted this balance when assigning its top rating, observing how the team respects both Atlantic produce and classic confectionery methods.
Adolf Heinrich opened the original property in 1935 with just eighteen beds. His son Hans-Jürgen managed expansions through the late twentieth century, adding sea-facing balconies and overseeing the glass dining hall. Managing partners Bernhard Dohne and Heiko Prinzhorn-Köster took over in 2020, preserving the family approach while upgrading facilities. This steady transition keeps daily service familiar, allowing staff to recognize regular guests across the entire complex.
