The story

Atelier Sanssouci: Michelin-Starred Modern Cuisine in Dresden's Historic Villa Sorgenfrei

An Artist's Workshop for Fine Dining

The name says it all: Atelier Sanssouci is the creative workshop of its kitchen team. Housed in the historic ballroom of the Villa Sorgenfrei, a restored 18th-century wine estate in the Radebeul vineyards just outside Dresden, the restaurant transforms an already remarkable space into a stage for precise, thoughtful cooking.

The dining room itself is a character in the meal. Sandstone floors, a stucco ceiling, and rare painted mirrors and wall frescoes create an atmosphere that is both grand and intimate. By candlelight, with tables dressed in linen and silver, the setting feels genuinely transportive. In warmer months, the summer terrace opens onto the French-style park, where old oaks and chestnut trees provide a soundtrack of birdsong.

Modern Cuisine with French Roots

The kitchen team describes their work as a devoted interpretation of French cuisine, executed with classical technique and a modern sensibility. The monthly changing menu is the product of this conviction. A recent four-course offering, part of the Kochsternstunden series, showcases the kitchen's range: a velvety salsify velouté with egg yolk and Périgord truffle, a fillet of skrei cod with spinach and Annabell potatoes, or a saddle of venison "Baden-Baden" with pear and lingonberry. The meal builds to a Valrhona chocolate dessert with egg-liqueur espuma.

The service team guides guests through these courses with knowledgeable wine pairings, often featuring exclusive bottlings from Saxon producers like Matthias Schuh, as well as selections from Rheinhessen, Stellenbosch, and Portugal.

Recognition and Philosophy

This dedication has earned Atelier Sanssouci a Michelin star, alongside two red toques from Gault Millau and seven pans from Gusto. The awards reflect a kitchen that balances ambition with a sense of place. The restaurant's modern cuisine is not about novelty for its own sake, but about refinement: careful sourcing, clean execution, and a menu that evolves with the seasons.

For those who wish to linger beyond dinner, the restaurant also serves homemade cakes on weekend afternoons, offering a quieter taste of the same kitchen's care.

Concept Fine dining with 4 to 10 courses in the evening. On Sundays, a lunch menu is offered. Culinary Style Since Sven Evers transitioned from sous-chef to head chef at the end of 2024, he has been refining the profile of French cuisine with his own distinctive style. It begins very elegantly with Breton mackerel served alongside a Beluga lentil salad, while the crustacean bisque gains a spicy kick from peppers. Slow-cooked roast beef is accompanied by delicate cauliflower florets that provide a contrast to coarse mustard. A fine chocolate variation is complemented by redcurrants and dollops of yogurt. Wine Sommelier Christoph Gerischer has curated an excellent selection of international bottlings. As a connoisseur of Saxon winemakers, he also recommends pairing the menu with wines from the Palatinate or Baden regions. Atmosphere Nestled right in the heart of the vineyards, this garden hall makes a bold statement thanks to its antique-inspired ambiance and experienced staff. Carolin Vogt proves herself to be a seasoned hostess with distinct style. Verdict An excellently managed establishment with a French culinary style.
