The story
In the small village of Dannberg, just outside Erlangen in the Nuremberg metropolitan region, the Wirtschaft von Johann Gerner has quietly evolved over generations. Today, Detlef Gerner, the great-grandson and current chef, leads the kitchen with a clear focus: regional produce served with care and precision. His wife, alongside the senior chef, shapes the warm, unpretentious atmosphere that makes guests feel at home from the moment they step in.
The restaurant’s Michelin Recommended status reflects its commitment to honest, ingredient-driven cooking. Here, country cooking is not a nostalgic label but a living practice — one that draws directly from the surrounding landscape of meadows, forests, and ponds.
Gerner’s kitchen works with what the region offers: game such as venison and wild duck, veal, asparagus, and the local “Weihersau” (pond pork). Vegetables arrive fresh from Nuremberg’s wholesale market, where the team connects directly with regional growers. While the menu changes with the seasons, every dish — no matter how simple it sounds on paper — is finished with a thoughtful detail that elevates it beyond the ordinary.
The wine cellar is equally considered, stocking typical wines from different German regions, selected to match both the food and the guest’s personal taste.
The Wirtschaft’s setting is deliberately unhurried. Open Thursday through Sunday from 5 to 10 pm, it offers a refuge from the city’s pace. A private dining room, the “Ofenstübla,” accommodates small gatherings, while the surrounding area invites walks to nature reserves and historic landmarks. For those wishing to stay longer, the property’s “Häusla” — a self-catering guesthouse with two double and two single rooms — is available for exclusive bookings.
As Detlef Gerner puts it: “When you have arrived in Dannberg with all your senses, and any longing for great squares of this world is stilled for a while, then you have discovered what we strive for.”
