The story
For over 250 years, the same family has welcomed guests at Gasthaus Sonne in the village of Vörstetten, just outside Freiburg. Today, sisters Ulrike and Elisabeth Stahl run the inn with a quiet, hands-on dedication that has earned the restaurant a Michelin Recommended distinction for 2026. The recognition is a testament to their commitment to both tradition and modern precision.
The setting is quintessentially Baden: a half-timbered house with a chestnut-shaded garden that becomes a leafy retreat in warm weather. Inside, a tiled stove warms the dining room, and the atmosphere is unhurried and genuine. The sisters describe their house as “one of the most beautiful inns in Germany,” and the care they take in preserving the historic fabric is evident in every wood-paneled corner.
The kitchen reflects a contemporary approach to regional flavors. The menu changes with the seasons, but signature dishes include a delicate Rehragout (venison stew) with house-made Spätzle and apple red cabbage, a Badische Ochsenbrust (beef brisket) with horseradish sauce, and a roasted Zanderfilet on spinach with tagliatelle and port wine sauce. Vegetarians are well served: a filled herb crêpe with spinach, wild mushrooms, and feta-béchamel is a standout, as is the spinach risotto with a mix of local mushrooms. The restaurant also offers a takeaway service for those who wish to enjoy the cooking at home.
The sisters are supported by a young, professional team, and the result is a dining experience that feels both rooted and fresh – a place where a 250-year-old tradition stays alive through careful, contemporary cooking.
