The Gasthaus zum Raben has been a place of hospitality since 1604. The current building, dating from 1805, was once a meeting point for Freiburg students and was carefully renovated in 2001. Today, it is run by Melanie and Pierre Barrel, a couple who bring genuine warmth and a deep respect for tradition to every guest’s experience.

Chef Pierre Barrel

Pierre Barrel’s career includes stints in several Michelin-starred restaurants in France, Switzerland, and Germany. He was Sous-Chef at the renowned Vendôme under Joachim Wissler and later head chef at the Alte Post in Müllheim. His philosophy is clear: quality and respect for products. He works closely with local producers, ensuring that seasonal ingredients from the Black Forest and beyond are treated with care. Nothing goes to waste; every component is used creatively.

Two Worlds of Dining

The Gasthaus offers two distinct experiences. The Restaurant La Table du Raben is a fine-dining space where Barrel’s French creativity shines through a 4- or 6-course Carte Blanche menu. The menu changes with the seasons, featuring fresh fish, regional meats, and vegetables, all prepared with house-made sauces. The wine list, called "Le Livre de Cave," is a thoughtful selection of French classics and regional wines from the Markgräflerland and Kaiserstuhl.

For a more relaxed affair, the Bistro Français serves uncomplicated, seasonal dishes with French charm. A recent "3-Gänge Menü du Marché" at 43 euros exemplifies the bistro’s accessible approach.
