The story
In the heart of Glottertal, just outside Freiburg, Zum Goldenen Engel is a small, traditional inn that has earned a place on the Michelin guide. The recognition is a testament to the careful, regionally rooted cooking of chef Michael Mannel, who works with his wife Isabelle Linder to run the family-owned guesthouse.
The restaurant’s atmosphere is unpretentious and welcoming. Guests dine in cosy, decorated rooms or, in warmer months, on the veranda. The setting is classic Black Forest: a village inn where the focus stays on the plate and the company.
Mannel’s kitchen is built on seasonal and regional produce. The menu changes with what is available, drawing from nearby farmers and producers. This is country cooking at its most honest — dishes that highlight the flavours of the region without unnecessary flourishes.
The restaurant is open for lunch and dinner, with a break in the afternoon. Wednesday is the weekly day off, and Thursday service begins at 6 pm. Guests are encouraged to reserve a table to ensure a spot.
Zum Goldenen Engel also operates a small hotel with 14 rooms decorated in a modern country style. A breakfast of regional products is served each morning for guests. The inn has no lift, and dogs are not permitted at breakfast. Check-in is possible from 3 pm daily.
Whether you visit for a meal or an overnight stay, the Engel offers a genuine taste of the Black Forest — grounded, seasonal, and quietly excellent.
