The story

Atable im Amtshaus, Freinsheim – Modern Classic Dining in the Palatinate

Atable im Amtshaus, Freinsheim

In the heart of Freinsheim’s historic old town, the Atable im Amtshaus occupies the former stables of a Baroque-era building, where sand-coloured sandstone arches now frame a dining room that feels both ancient and immediate. The invitation is simple: “zu Tisch” – to table. Chef Swen Bultmann brings a deep classical French foundation to every plate, honed during stages at Steinheuer’s Restaurant and Restaurant Dieter Müller, and later as sous-chef at Restaurant La Vie. His style here is what he calls "modern classic" – elegant, precise aromas served in a relaxed setting.

The kitchen draws heavily on the surrounding Palatinate, Germany’s "vegetable garden," and the nearby Alsace for exceptional produce. This seasonal, product-driven approach is complemented by a wine programme curated by sommelier Sybille Bultmann, a multiple-award-winning professional who placed among Germany’s top sommeliers and twice led the wine service at La Vie. Her list focuses on depth of vintage, with bottles from established top estates as well as rising talents, stored in the restaurant’s two cellars until they reach peak drinkability. The result is a wine list that has been repeatedly recognised for its range and intelligence.

Dining here can happen in the cool, vaulted interior or, in fair weather, under the open sky of the inner courtyard. The cuisine is international in outlook but rooted in the region – think perfectly executed classical dishes reimagined with lightness and finesse. The Bultmanns ran their Atable in Ludwigshafen for eight years before moving into the Amtshaus in Freinsheim, and the warmth of their hospitality remains unchanged. A Michelin recommendation underscores the consistency of the cooking and the care of the service. Atable im Amtshaus is a place for those who value serious technique worn lightly, and a wine list that rewards curiosity.
