The story
In Freyung, at the edge of the Nationalpark Bayerischer Wald, Landgasthaus Schuster has been a destination for discerning diners since 1989. What began as a small village pub was transformed by Bärbel and Leopold Schuster in 1993 into a refined gourmet restaurant in the style of a country inn. For over 35 years, it has been counted among Germany’s best restaurants by leading guides.
Leopold Schuster’s cooking is defined by a clear credo: treat the palate to something special, combining regional cuisine with the extraordinary. He rejects all showmanship, instead working with enthusiasm and great attention to detail to create ever-new dishes. His weekly changing menu is built around the seasonal offerings of excellent regional products, some from the restaurant’s own garden. This dedication to seasonal classic cuisine is at the heart of everything he does.
The atmosphere is tastefully bright and homely, where guests experience heartfelt hospitality. Bärbel Schuster is the good spirit of the house, creating an ambiance that pleases guests and caring for them with her warm, open nature. She also manages a well-stocked wine cellar of around 200 positions, focusing on Germany, Austria, Italy, France, and Spain. She finds the perfect wine for every dish, from top wines of renowned vintners to exciting bottles from young, up-and-coming winemakers. This combination of refined seasonal cuisine and genuine warmth has earned the restaurant its Michelin recommendation and numerous other accolades.
