The story
Gasthaus Schupfen has been a fixture on the banks of the Rhine since 1455 – the year the property was first recorded as a place where guests could eat and drink for a fee. The current owners, the Marx family, took over in 2008 and have since gently renovated the restaurant and its garden terrace, preserving the soul of the building while making it a welcoming space for today’s diners.
Dine in one of three cosy “Stuben” or, when the weather permits, on the beautifully positioned garden terrace. The view over the Rhine adds a quiet elegance to every meal. The atmosphere is warm and unpretentious, rooted in the traditions of a Swiss Gasthaus.
The kitchen, led by chef Christian Türke, takes classic, hearty dishes and gives them a fresh, contemporary touch. The menu changes with the seasons, drawing on local produce and a farm-to-table ethos. Starters include Rindstatar with gelled egg yolk and Tuna Tataki on glass noodle salad. For mains, the Rafzer Zanderfilet (pike-perch) with saffron risotto and the Eschenzer Wasserbüffel-Burger are standouts. Vegetarians are well looked after, with options like mango-chili risotto and housemade buckwheat balls. Desserts, such as the Schokoladen-Blaubeerbrownie with coconut ice cream, round off the meal.
The kitchen and service teams work closely together under the guidance of host Philipp Diener. The staff list includes a dedicated events manager and a bankettleiterin, reflecting the restaurant’s role as a hub for weddings, corporate events, and the legendary “Schupfen-Events”.
Gasthaus Schupfen’s commitment to excellent cooking at fair prices has earned it a Michelin Bib Gourmand for 2026. The award highlights the kind of dependable, generous cooking that makes this historic inn a destination worth crossing the river for.
