The story
Just at the entrance to the Tegernsee Valley, the family-run Gasthaus Jennerwein has been a beacon of traditional Bavarian hospitality for generations. The inn takes its name from the legendary poacher Georg Jennerwein, and today it bridges old-world charm with a modern touch. The Michelin inspectors have recognized this balance, awarding the restaurant a Michelin Recommended distinction – a testament to the quality and sincerity of the experience.
Chef Georg “Schorsch” Weber, who took over the inn in August 2010, grew up in a restaurateur family and honed his craft at some of Germany’s finest addresses: the Hotel Bareiss in Baiersbronn, the Dallmayr Restaurant in Munich, and the Königshof, alongside mentors such as Michael Käfer and Alfons Schuhbeck. His training in alpine cuisine is evident in every dish.
The heart of the house is the Jennerwein-Stube, a wood-panelled room with creaking floorboards, scrubbed tables, and a magnificent tiled stove dating back to 1890. The atmosphere is one of genuine coziness – a place where time slows down. The inn also boasts a leafy beer garden with a gentle fountain, a favorite spot among locals and visitors alike. Here, under old trees, the gravel crunches underfoot and the mood is relaxed.
The kitchen focuses on country cooking – regional Bavarian fare elevated with care and creativity. Expect hearty classics alongside seasonal dishes that reflect the character of Upper Bavaria. From traditional Bavarian dumplings to lighter summer plates, the menu also offers vegetarian options. Everything is prepared with local ingredients and a respect for the land. A freshly tapped Bavarian beer or a glass from the extensive wine list completes the meal.
At Jennerwein, the finest thing on offer might just be the permission to sit back, enjoy, and feel at home.
