The story
The story of Farmerhaus begins in 1957, when Alfred Schodlok left his home in the Odenwald for Namibia. Captivated by the landscapes, the people, and especially the cuisine, he and his wife Ursula opened Germany’s first African restaurant in Groß-Umstadt in 1965. Today, the third generation – sons Sandro and Marlon – carries on the tradition. The restaurant remains proudly independent, family-owned, and rooted in the same philosophy: to offer a place where guests feel welcomed like friends, not just diners.
Perched above the vineyards with a sweeping view, Farmerhaus is designed to evoke the wide-open spaces of southern Africa. Warm light, carefully chosen decor, and the scent of exotic spices set the mood. The terrace, overlooking the Umstadt wine hills, is a favourite spot for watching the sunset. The restaurant describes itself as a place where “the wind of cosmopolitanism and freedom” meets the harmony of genuine hospitality. It is an atmosphere that invites lingering – time for good conversation, big feelings, and enriching company.
South African cooking defies easy definition, and Farmerhaus embraces that complexity. The kitchen draws on the Cape’s fusion of Indian, Southeast Asian, Dutch, and French influences, combined with local African ingredients. The result is what they call “Rainbow Cuisine” – vibrant, layered, and never boring.
Menus change regularly, but signature dishes include a six-course journey with creations like Richards Bay (prawn, beluga caviar, mango) and Paterson (Namibia beef fillet with topinambur, cocoa, and vanilla). Game meats such as zebra, springbok, and ostrich appear alongside seafood and vegetarian options. Every Wednesday, the restaurant offers a ten-course “African Flavours” tasting menu, available with a vegetarian alternative.
Farmerhaus has long been recognised by the Michelin guide, receiving a Recommended distinction for its consistent quality and distinctive character. The award reflects what the family has built over six decades: a destination that is more than a restaurant – a place where the spirit of Africa comes alive in the heart of the Odenwald.
