The story

Fischereihafen Restaurant Hamburg – Classic Seafood by the Elbe, Michelin Recommended

A Family Affair

Since 1981, the Kowalke family has run Fischereihafen Restaurant directly on the Elbe. What began with Rüdiger Kowalke’s warm hospitality is now carried forward by his son Dirk, who took over in 1997. Susanne Kowalke, the “charmanteste Gastgeberin der Stadt,” ensures every guest feels welcome, while Benjamin Kast (Benny) has been Dirk’s right hand since 2011. The result is a restaurant where a family member is always present—a rare continuity in Hamburg’s dining scene.

The Kitchen

In 2018, chef Jens Klunker returned to the kitchen where he began his career in the late 1980s, following in the footsteps of his father Wolf-Dieter Klunker, who had been the chef for over thirty years. This double generational shift is unique for a restaurant of this size. The team’s credo is a trio of top quality, heartfelt service, and fair value. The cuisine is classic seafood with a modern edge: alongside beloved Hamburg dishes like Räucheraalfilet on herbed scrambled eggs and Steinbutt with Pommery mustard sauce, you’ll find sushi, sashimi, and pepper-crusted tuna on Asian wok vegetables. Oysters, lobster, and caviar are always available.

The Setting

The restaurant’s balcony terrace seats about fifty and offers a grand view of the harbour and passing ships. Inside, the atmosphere is elegant yet relaxed. A valet parks your car at the door. The Oyster Bar serves cocktails and champagne. Michelin has recognised this consistency with a Recommended award, confirming what regulars have known for decades: Fischereihafen Restaurant delivers classic seafood cuisine in a setting that feels both special and welcoming.

Concept A Hanseatic fish tradition with a view of the Elbe – an institution for connoisseurs of fine seafood cuisine for decades. Down-to-earth yet refined and cosmopolitan in its standards. Cuisine Style Extravagant creativity is nowhere to be found: Under Jens Klunker, the kitchen prepares fish with precise craftsmanship and subtle sophistication. Smoked eel fillets on herb scrambled eggs with dark rye bread are executed flawlessly, while the crispy bacon-wrapped plaice is served with potato and cucumber salad. Whether it's lobster fricassee or sole meunière: marine flavors shine through clearly, and sauces are delicately balanced. Wine The wine list, featuring over 100 selections, appropriately complements the cuisine. Creative cocktails are available from the oyster bar. Atmosphere Elegant decor featuring abundant brass and dark wood. Floor-to-ceiling windows frame views of the harbor and the Elbe. Even when the restaurant is at full capacity, the warm service under Dirk Kowalke remains attentive and well-coordinated. Verdict This maritime classic preserves its distinction without ever seeming outdated.
