The story
On the Ballindamm, steps from the Alster lake, Grill Royal Hamburg brings the precision of a wood-fired grill to the city’s fine dining scene. Open daily from 17:30, this is a restaurant where the cooking is confident, the ingredients are sourced with care, and the atmosphere is welcoming without pretence.
At the heart of the menu is a serious selection of beef: Black Angus from Greater Omaha, USA; dry-aged cuts from the Darss Peninsula in northern Germany; and Wagyu from Hokkaido, Japan, graded A5. The Chateaubriand, sourced from black-and-white Fleckvieh in northern Germany, comes in portions of 500 or 1000 grams. A Tomahawk Steak is offered at market price. For those who prefer something lighter, fish and shellfish are treated with equal respect—grilled Loup de Mer from France, Norwegian wild salmon, and Argentinian red prawns roasted with aioli.
Vegetable dishes hold their own. There is an artichoke from Brittany with a shallot vinaigrette and fermented garlic cream, and an Acquerello risotto with white asparagus, peas, and tarragon. Desserts include a classic crème brûlée and a Guanaja chocolate mousse.
Specials include a Chef's Choice Menu, a three-course surprise menu served family-style from two persons, priced at 99 euros per person. The wine list, not detailed here, matches the kitchen’s ambition.
