The story
At Klinker, near the U3 Hoheluftbrücke in Hamburg’s Harvestehude district, the philosophy is straightforward: "Das Leben findet draußen statt" – life happens outside. This translates into a modern cuisine that is deeply rooted in the seasons and built on vegetables. The kitchen works with regional suppliers, processing raw ingredients holistically to minimize waste and maximize flavour.
The menu reflects this commitment. Many dishes are vegetarian or vegan, and the approach is flexible: guests can choose a surprise Klinker Menu for two, designed for sharing, or pick individual plates from a changing selection. Expect creations like celery with tomato, basil and croutons, or Chinese cabbage with yuzu, chilli, whey and almond. Heartier options include potato with horseradish, endive salad and hazelnut, and a lamb dish with tabbouleh. The kitchen notes it can accommodate allergies only to a limited degree, and cannot offer a fully vegan, gluten- or histamine-free menu.
The setting is relaxed and welcoming. Spontaneous visits are welcome, but reservations can be made online. Private dining is also available, and the restaurant offers outdoor seating. The wine list, too, is carefully curated, with a strong focus on German and French sparkling wines, including a notable selection of Champagnes.
Klinker’s approach has earned it a Michelin recommendation, a recognition that aligns with its clear, honest cooking. It’s a place that values togetherness – "einfach mal wieder miteinander essen" – and lets the quality of the ingredients and the simplicity of the preparation speak for themselves.
