The story
Perched on the top floor of the The Fontenay hotel, Lakeside offers a dining experience defined by its extraordinary setting. Floor-to-ceiling panoramic windows frame the expanse of Hamburg's Außenalster, while a mirrored wall draws the light inward, creating a space of serene clarity. This is the backdrop for the intense, modern cuisine of chef Julian Stowasser.
Since taking the helm in March 2020, Julian Stowasser has brought a distinctive approach to Lakeside. His cooking is described as bold and unconventional, with unexpected combinations that deliver both lightness and a high density of flavour. Stowasser’s career includes stints at the three-star Restaurant Atelier in Munich and at Tetsuya's in Sydney, experience that informs his precise, creative work. In the kitchen, he leads a passionate, tightly-knit team that treats each plate as a work of art.
The team's dedication earned its first Michelin star in 2021, followed by a second in April 2023. This recognition is woven into the fabric of the restaurant, a source of pride for Stowasser and his crew. The intimate dining room seats just 40 guests, and a private room is available for up to ten. Host Michel Buder and his service team—awarded "Service of the Year" in 2020—ensure the experience is warm, attentive, and never intrusive. Here, the modern cuisine and the limitless view come together for a genuinely singular meal.
