On Weidenallee, Witwenball is a restaurant that wears its history lightly but proudly. The name reaches back to the 1920s, when Elfriede opened a ballroom she called “Elfriedes Witwenball.” Back then, the focus was on beer from forgotten breweries, sweet wines, and champagne served in thick-rimmed glasses. Today, under owners Julia and Axel Bode (who revived the name in 2013), the spirit of conviviality, music, and a touch of the sublime remains—but the offering has evolved into something far more refined.

This is a family-run restaurant, described by its team as a place of appreciation and warmth. The kitchen is led by Eugen Weissmann, a chef with a clear signature and a strong foundation in high-end gastronomy, including a stint at a Michelin-starred restaurant. At Witwenball, he combines creativity with structure, aiming to bring together enjoyment, team leadership, and sustainability. The result is a modern cuisine that lets good ingredients speak for themselves.

The wine list is a standout. With over 500 selections, it features only wines from individualist producers—winemakers who see their work as craft, their vineyards as fragile loans from nature, and the cellar work as just an epilogue to a long story. It’s a list for those who appreciate the story behind the bottle.

The setting is intimate, with outdoor seating available for warmer days. On Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, a three-course “Your Choice” menu is offered at EUR 57, a chance to experience the kitchen’s approach without overthinking. The atmosphere is one of deliberate ease—a place where the golden twenties are not recreated, but remembered in a way that feels entirely of the present.
