The story
In Hamburg’s Flottbek district, a former blacksmith’s forge has been transformed into a warm, welcoming spot for tapas and more. The name – Zur Flottbeker Schmiede – is a direct nod to the building’s history, but the cooking looks south, to the Mediterranean and Portugal.
The kitchen sends out a menu of small plates that lean into the bright, bold flavours of the region. Think grilled vegetables, cured meats, seafood, and cheeses, all prepared with a straightforward, confident hand. The restaurant’s own website sums it up simply: “Lecker Tapas und mehr” – delicious tapas and more. The emphasis is on sharing, on relaxed evenings, and on letting the ingredients speak.
The setting is unpretentious, with outdoor seating for warmer months and parking available nearby. The interior keeps the character of the old smithy, creating a cosy, candlelit atmosphere that feels both rustic and intimate.
This combination of quality cooking and honest value has earned Zur Flottbeker Schmiede a Bib Gourmand from the Michelin Guide. The award recognises restaurants that offer good food at moderate prices – a perfect fit for a place where the focus is on flavour, not fuss. Whether you come for a glass of wine and a few plates or a full evening of sharing, the kitchen delivers consistently.
Open Tuesday through Sunday, with the kitchen serving until 21:30 on weeknights and through the afternoon on Sundays. Monday is the weekly day of rest.
