The story
In the small Westphalian town of Harsewinkel, the Poppenborg family has been welcoming guests since 1906. Now in its third generation, the house is run by Heinrich and Anne Poppenborg, who have made it one of the best-regarded restaurants in the region. The heart of the operation is the Bistro-Restaurant "Stübchen", a cosy, rustic space that earned a Michelin Bib Gourmand for its good quality, good value cooking.
The kitchen, led by Heinz Poppenborg, builds on a classical French foundation while drawing on regional Westphalian products. The result is a menu that feels both rooted and refined – exactly the kind of honest, skilful cooking the Bib Gourmand celebrates. Guests can enjoy their meal in the snug interior or, when weather permits, on the garden terrace set in an idyllic fern garden shaded by plane trees.
The restaurant itself – the elegant gourmet dining room – is currently reserved for groups of 8 to 18 people, who can book a four-course gourmet menu (requests at least ten days in advance). For everyone else, the Stübchen bistro is the place to be: open evenings from 18:00, and for lunch on Sundays from 12:00. The Poppenborgs and their team serve all dishes with the same warmth that has defined the house for over a century.
Whether you're stopping by for a relaxed dinner on the terrace or planning a special celebration, Poppenborg's Stübchen offers a genuine taste of Westphalian hospitality, recognised by the Michelin guide and other leading restaurant critics.
