The story
Diergardts Kühler Grund has been a part of Hattingen for over a century. What began as an unusual mix of Schnapscasino, dairy, and grocery store in the hollow by the Sprockhöveler Bach has grown into a family-run restaurant that the Guide Michelin now recommends. The story is rooted in the region: after their shifts, miners would buy milk and everyday goods here, washing down the coal dust with a daily schnapps. That sense of place – Heimat – remains the foundation of everything the kitchen does.
The menu is built on classic cuisine, prepared with ingredients sourced as locally as possible. As the team puts it, they want to present the culinary diversity of their homeland. The cooking philosophy is simple: use the best ingredients, explore different flavours, and share the meal with friends. Seasonal highlights such as the annual asparagus special (Spargel Spezial) reflect this commitment to what is fresh and nearby. The kitchen is open for lunch and dinner, with a focus on letting the produce speak for itself.
Wine is more than a beverage here. The owner trained as a winemaker at Weingut Meyer-Näkel, and that passion shows in a carefully curated list that includes natural wines – made with minimal intervention to preserve the authentic expression of the grapes. The wine cellar is described as a second great love, and guests are invited to explore its depth alongside their meal.
The restaurant aims to make every guest feel like part of the family. The atmosphere is warm and relaxed – “eintreten, entspannen und das gute Gefühl als willkommener Gast in vollen Zügen auskosten.” Whether for a quiet dinner, a private party, or one of the regular events like the fish buffets or the Küchenparty, the team takes care of everything so guests can simply enjoy. The Michelin recommendation, alongside recognition from Gault & Millau (2 toques) and Falstaff (88 points), underscores the consistency of this family-run establishment.
