The story
In Heidelberg’s historic Altstadt, just steps from the Alte Brücke, Chambao brings a warm, Spanish-inspired philosophy to fine dining. The name comes from a simple palm-leaf shelter on the beach where families gather to cook, eat, and celebrate life. That spirit of sharing and hospitality is woven into every evening here.
Chambao is a Michelin Recommended restaurant, a recognition that speaks to its commitment to refined, creative cooking. The kitchen focuses on modern fusion cuisine with a strong Mediterranean foundation — expect dishes that balance precision with playfulness, presented with quiet elegance.
The restaurant offers two distinct experiences under one roof. Upstairs, Chambao is a fine dining destination where multi-course menus are crafted with seasonal ingredients and a sense of narrative. Downstairs, Chambino is a relaxed tapas bar serving modern interpretations of Spanish classics, with what the restaurant calls “the most beautiful view of the Old Bridge.”
The standout experience is the Heidelberg Menu — a six-course journey inspired by the city’s history, personalities, and landmarks. Each course tells a chapter of Heidelberg’s story, from the Neckar river to the castle, from the Philosophenweg to the old university. It’s a culinary city tour served on porcelain, with accompanying texts in German or English. Both a classic and a vegetarian version are available.
Chambao is also a space for celebration. The team hosts private and corporate events, weddings, kitchen parties, and even culinary city tours. Dogs are welcome, and dietary needs can be accommodated with advance notice. Whether you come for a tasting menu or a glass of wine on the terrace, the welcome is genuine.
