The story
In January 2003, a fire destroyed the 700-year-old Hotel “Ritter” in Neckargemünd, taking with it the legendary “Knappenkeller” – vaulted cellars dating back to the 13th century. For thirteen years the space lay dormant. Then Sandy and Christian Heß, veterans of the acclaimed “Goldener Pflug” in Heiligkreuzsteinach, saw its potential. In March 2016, they opened Christians Restaurant in those revived rooms, breathing new life into the ancient stone. The restaurant quickly earned its place in the region’s culinary landscape, and today holds a Michelin Recommended distinction – a fitting nod to the care and consistency found here.
The kitchen defines itself as “kitchen classics reinterpreted, complemented by young, fresh, uncomplicated and seasonally oriented dishes with diverse influences.” This is contemporary Mediterranean cooking grounded in the rhythm of the market. Spring brings the first herbs, asparagus, morels and rhubarb; autumn yields game and root vegetables. The menu changes regularly, but recent offerings give a clear picture: a starter of octopus and prawn carpaccio with avocado and pico de gallo, or Loch Duart salmon prepared three ways (cured, tartare, terrine) with lemon, dill and cucumber relish. Main courses might feature stone bass in a tomato-saffron broth with paella and mussels, or a veal medallion with cheek, truffle and savoy cabbage. Vegetarians are not forgotten – a chickpea main with raz el hanout, aubergine and date couscous can be ordered with or without black tiger prawns.
On Saturday evenings and holidays, the restaurant offers a “Menu Carrousel”: guests choose at least two courses from a selection of four, or opt for a four- or five-course gourmet tasting menu. This flexible approach lets diners follow their own appetite.
Christians Restaurant occupies bright, spacious rooms directly on the Neckar River, decorated in a welcoming country-house style (“Landhausstil”). In summer, two terraces open – the lower “Griechische Weinstube” with about 50 seats, partly covered and overlooking the water, and the “Prinz-Carl” terrace. The atmosphere is calm and unhurried; the knowledgeable service team is happy to guide you through the menu and wine list.
The restaurant can accommodate private events for up to 110 guests, making it a popular choice for weddings and celebrations. A partnership with the nearby Hotel Kredell offers overnight stays with a breakfast built from regional and organic produce. Whether you come for a leisurely dinner or a festive gathering, Christians Restaurant delivers a consistently thoughtful, season-driven meal that justifies its Michelin recognition.
