The story

Oben Heidelberg – Seasonal Fine Dining with Michelin Star, Germany

Oben in Heidelberg

Perched 465 meters above sea level, Oben in Heidelberg offers a dining experience that is both grounded and elevated. The restaurant’s name is fitting, as it sits high above the city, a setting that mirrors its culinary philosophy: rooted in the region yet reaching for the extraordinary. The team, led by Küchenchef and Gastgeber Robert Rädel, creates a welcome that is genuine and warm.

Chef Rädel, a father, husband, and Küchenmeister, has been cooking in Heidelberg since 2004 and at Oben since 2013. His style is product-oriented, aromatic, and creative. He and Souschef Loris de Luigi, a Swiss-born chef with classical training at the Europäischer Hof Heidelberg and experience at Mainz’s Pankratz, share a clear philosophy: they use local, selected resources, always searching for the special without a rigid focus on prime goods. Their seasonal cooking is a direct reflection of the landscape and the moment.

The current winter 2026 menu presents 13 distinct combinations, including a prologue of small bites, all precisely coordinated. A meal might begin with a carrot, chamomile, and miso creation, followed by dishes like beef, eel, and elderflower, or trout with radish and airy onion. The main menu continues with highlights such as beetroot marble in a spiced broth with goat’s fresh cheese, a Polish-style cauliflower with hazelnut and brown butter, and a Landes pork tail with apple and chives. The evening concludes with local game, a bacon-cabbage roulade, and sour cherry. Each course reflects the chefs’ commitment to pure, seasonal ingredients.

This dedication to quality and creativity has earned Oben a Michelin star, a recognition woven naturally into the restaurant’s fabric. The dining room, managed by the charming Leis Büttner, a sommelier from the Palatinate who focuses on regional wines, completes the experience. Here, the team believes that time taken for a meal is time that gives something back.

Concept Deep in the forest, high above the city, Robert Rädel serves a 13-course miniature menu. (book well in advance) Culinary Style At "Oben", they take regionalism seriously: saltwater fish, tropical fruits, or other "prime goods" of classical haute cuisine are not part of the menus, which impress with immense culinary imagination. For the amuse-bouches, beet is paired with cumin caramel, while the raw-marinated Altrhein zander comes with knotgrass and fermented red cabbage. And leading up to the highlight: the "Landschweinwedel" (pork tail) with tart Boskop apple and sharp chive-mustard seasoning. Wine Fortunately, Heidelberg in the Kurpfalz region lies at the epicenter of the wine-growing areas of Württemberg, Baden, and the Palatinate. Atmosphere Stone walls, wooden furniture, and – yes – rocking chairs. Inside, a relaxed service; outside, an onslaught of green tones. Verdict Regional fine dining in a hiking hut for seasoned diners.
