The story
For over one hundred years, the building that houses Am Osterfeuer has been a part of Herford's landscape, starting life as a bakery. Today, it is a restaurant run with love by the Dunker family in its fourth generation. At the helm is chef Hans-Jörg Dunker, known affectionately to regulars as "Hansi." His cooking reflects a personal philosophy: "I love young Westphalian cuisine with influences from around the world." This translates into a menu where hearty German classics sit comfortably alongside Mediterranean dishes and international flavours.
The restaurant offers several distinct settings. The main dining room provides a cosy, traditional inn atmosphere with a regulars' table and rustic wood accents. For a brighter, more intimate meal, the fireplace room is a popular choice for couples and small groups. A large hall can accommodate over one hundred guests for celebrations, and in warm weather, the terrace becomes a sought-after spot for leisurely dining. The same warm hospitality extends beyond the restaurant walls through a dedicated catering service.
The kitchen at Am Osterfeuer balances comfort and refinement. Appetisers range from a classic Caesar salad to a wild herb salad with Thai mango, scallop, and prawn. Starters like the potato foam soup with truffle or the beef tartare with quail egg and chives show a clear eye for detail. Main courses are where the international influence shines. Alongside a classic Cordon Bleu and a schnitzel with potato salad, diners can choose crispy zander fillet with mashed potatoes, grilled tuna in a coconut and lemongrass stew, or a hearty cheeseburger. A five-course tasting menu, which might include dishes like grilled veal fillet with morel cream and a Tahiti vanilla parfait, offers a curated journey through the chef's repertoire. The Michelin Recommended status is a natural nod to the consistency and quality found here.
