The story
In the quiet village of Großbundenbach, on the Sickinger Höhe plateau near Homburg, WurzelWerk brings a refined sense of place to the table. The restaurant is part of the Gästehaus Alte Bäckerei, a former bakery built in 1932 that the Bendzko family revived in 2001 and has run as a guesthouse ever since. Since 2021, the second generation—Benjamin Bendzko together with Cleo Thalheim—has carried the tradition forward, now with a kitchen that has earned a Michelin recommendation.
The name WurzelWerk hints at the kitchen’s philosophy: cooking that draws deeply from the soil. The cuisine is seasonal and rooted in the farm-to-table ethos, with ingredients sourced from the region’s fields and forests. The restaurant’s setting—a lovingly restored bakery with an outdoor terrace—reflects the same care. In summer, guests can dine under the open sky, taking in the calm of the Palatinate countryside.
WurzelWerk’s recognition by the Michelin guide underscores the precision and integrity of its cooking. The award is a nod to a kitchen that lets the produce speak for itself, without unnecessary fuss. Whether you come for a leisurely lunch or an evening meal, the focus remains on what is fresh and local—a quiet, assured expression of the seasons on a plate.
