The story
Since 1919, the Goldener Engel has been a fixture in the wine-growing town of Ihringen, at the foot of the Kaiserstuhl. After a pause, the restaurant and hotel reopened in summer 2024, renovated and revitalised. The rooms were refreshed in time for December, and the kitchen came back to life with a clear purpose: to honour the past while looking forward. This is a place where locals and visitors alike gather around the Stammtisch – the regulars’ table – or celebrate a special evening. The atmosphere is welcoming, unpretentious, and rooted in the community.
The kitchen at Goldener Engel practices “bodenständige Wirtshausküche auf höchstem Niveau” – down-to-earth tavern food taken to a refined level. Classic dishes that recall grandmother’s cooking are given a light French touch, blending regional ingredients with classic technique. The menu changes with the seasons and the inspiration of the chef, always grounded in the traditions of the region. The wine list mirrors that philosophy: alongside local Ihringen and Kaiserstuhl wines, you will find bottles from young vintners, neighbouring French domains, and selected international labels.
Emma Ambs, a trained restaurant professional and hotel business economist, leads the front of house with warmth and precision. Her team brings together tradition and innovation, ensuring that every guest feels at home. The restaurant has earned a Michelin Recommended award for its consistent quality and honest cooking – a recognition that speaks to the dedication behind every plate. Whether you sit in the garden when the weather is fine or inside the cosy dining room, the Goldener Engel offers a genuine taste of Ihringen, past and present.
