The story
Perched on the edge of Jena, Landgrafen calls itself the city's balcony — and for good reason. The restaurant sits in a quiet, green setting at the city's outskirts, easily reached on foot or by car from the centre. Its architecture blends old stone walls with a modern glass cube, creating spaces that feel both grounded and airy. Inside, the Panoramarestaurant seats up to 80 guests and offers sweeping views over the Saale valley, while the Kaminzimmer brings an elegant cosiness with its large fireplace and separate access to a small tower terrace.
Landgrafen’s cooking philosophy is refreshingly direct. The team buys ingredients that can spoil, avoids anything labelled light or fat-free, and steers clear of additives a third-grader couldn't pronounce. They listen to their gut — and occasionally break their own rules. This approach to seasonal cuisine has earned the restaurant a Michelin recommendation, a nod to the kitchen's clarity and conviction. The menu changes with what’s best, and the team values creativity, intuition, and the courage to try something new without chasing trends.
At weekends and on select evenings, the restaurant opens for dinner. When the weather cooperates, the Biergarten — with over 100 seats and the best view of Jena — offers a simpler, self-service menu from March through October. The Sonnenterrasse, with space for more than 70, includes a small stage for weddings, concerts, or private events.
Service here is built on respect and professionalism. The team, from dishwasher to manager, works with trust and a shared sense of responsibility. Landgrafen aims not just to serve a meal, but to leave a lasting positive impression — and in that quiet spot above the city, it succeeds.
