The story
Mühlenrestaurant stands in Kaiserslautern as a destination for regional cuisine within the Mühle am Schlossberg, a three-sided farm dating to the 16th century. Architecture professor Horst Ermel renovated the property from agricultural use into a hotel and dining space by 2001. Guests dine in the former cow shed beneath a cross vault, surrounded by rustic stone and timber details. The setting connects directly to a sunlit inner courtyard open to the elements.
The kitchen maintains this standard through a large herb and vegetable garden holding over 130 plant varieties accessible to visitors. This garden supplies the daily harvest for seasonal preparations using fresh produce. Menus rotate frequently to showcase creative combinations drawn from local suppliers. Each dish highlights the connection between the table and the Palatinate landscape, ensuring every plate respects the traditions of regional cuisine.
This dedication to sourcing locally reinforced the restaurant's standing with a Schlemmer Atlas award carrying three spoons in 2026. Critics note the authentic atmosphere of the historic farm structure paired with diverse tasting menus. The venue hosts intimate meals in the main restaurant or events up to 50 guests in the same room. Larger parties can move to the Festscheune hall nearby.
