The story

Restaurant 1463 in Karlsruhe: Classic Cuisine in a Historic Setting

Alte Gemäuer, neuer Genuss

Restaurant 1463 occupies the oldest building in Karlsruhe, a former barn from the year 1463 that has been lovingly transformed into a modern ensemble of apartments, a conference room, and a restaurant. The historic shell, located in the Malerkolonie Grötzingen district, now houses a space that feels both timeless and contemporary. “Old walls. New splendor. New pleasure,” as the hosts describe it.

Gastgeber mit Herz und Hand

Since January 2020, Verena and Henning Weick have been the faces of 1463. Verena, a trained hotel manager, brings years of experience from leading positions at renowned hotels such as Deidesheimer Hof and Waldknechtshof. She oversees every detail with a warm, attentive presence. Henning, a trained chef and Küchenmeister (kitchen master), commands the kitchen and the wine cellar. His career includes kitchen leadership at acclaimed establishments like Gasthaus zur Kanne and Nassauer Hof. Together they have created a place where guests feel at home – whether for a meal, a short stay, or a business event.

Regionale und saisonale Küche

The kitchen focuses on classic cuisine rooted in regional and seasonal ingredients. Almost everything is made in-house, from stocks to desserts, with an emphasis on handcrafted quality. The menu changes frequently based on what is fresh from local farms and nearby producers. Short supply chains and personal relationships with growers are a priority. Guests can choose from fine multi-course menus or à la carte dishes that highlight the flavours of Baden and its European neighbours.

The wine list follows the same philosophy. It shines a spotlight on the vineyards of the Karlsruhe district, complemented by top producers from Baden, the Pfalz, and other German growing regions. International classics and aged treasures from “Henning’s Schatzkammer” (treasure chamber) round out the selection. For those who prefer non-alcoholic options, there are house-made syrups, juices from local orchards, and mineral water from the nearby Black Forest.

Anerkennung

The restaurant’s consistent quality and commitment to regional cuisine have earned it a Michelin Recommended award for 2026. It is a recognition of the Weicks’ dedication to honest, flavourful cooking and genuine hospitality.
