The story
First mentioned in 1082, the Alte Mühle near Koblenz was once a watermill for the lords of Kobern. Over the centuries it saw pilgrims, noble visitors, and the rhythms of rural life. More than four decades ago, Thomas Höreth began transforming this forgotten 11th-century mill into a place for guests and connoisseurs. Today, his wife Gudrun Höreth’s warmth and eye for detail bring the old stone walls to life.
The restaurant occupies several cosy parlours, each full of character. In warm weather, tables spill into the ancient courtyard, where oleander flowers bloom. Here, the kitchen serves country cooking rooted in regional traditions. Dishes highlight seasonal produce from the Mosel valley, paired with wines from the family’s own vineyard – a practice that reflects the estate’s farm-to-table philosophy. A three-course surprise menu with matching wines is a popular choice.
The Michelin guide has recognised Alte Mühle Thomas Höreth for its honest, flavourful country cooking and the unique setting. The award underlines what regulars have known for years: this is a place where hospitality and history come together naturally, without fuss. Whether you come for a leisurely dinner or an overnight stay in the adjoining Landhotel, the mill’s timeless atmosphere leaves a lasting impression.
