The story
Tucked into the rolling vineyards of Birkweiler, St. Laurentiushof – Schockes Küche is a place where Pfälzer warmth meets precise, modern cuisine. The restaurant, run by chef Maximilian Schocke and his team, earned a Michelin star for its clear, multi-layered cooking. Guests are welcomed with genuine hospitality and a touch of playful charm, making the atmosphere as memorable as the food.
The kitchen’s philosophy is straightforward: “clear flavor profiles, multi-layered and intense.” Every dish is built around the best seasonal ingredients, often drawing from the region’s bounty. Maximilian Schocke’s cooking shows a deep respect for produce—especially fish and seafood, which form the heart of the menu. The result is a style of modern cuisine that feels both refined and honest.
The evening menu unfolds over five to seven courses (165–195 €), beginning with small greetings from the kitchen. Highlights include Gamba Blanca with apple-mandelvinaigrette, dill, and platinum caviar; confit Loch Duart salmon with lentil cream and horseradish; and a pairing of Dieppe scallop with Iberico pork cheek, kohlrabi, and cashew. For those who prefer less seafood, a vegetarian alternative is available on request.
On Saturdays, the restaurant offers “Schockes Mittag,” a focused three-course lunch menu (89 €) inspired by maritime cuisine. It’s a lighter, midday expression of the same precision and clarity.
Dinner at Schockes Küche is designed to be unhurried. The team encourages guests to arrive between 18:30 and 19:00, settle in, and let the evening unfold. The service, led by Lara Schocke, is attentive and personal—her wine pairings, drawn from local and international bottles, are especially praised by regulars. With comfortable outdoor seating and parking on-site, the restaurant makes for a relaxed destination in the Südpfalz wine country.
