The story
Since opening in May 2017, KARRisma has become a defining culinary address in Lindau’s historic island old town. Housed in the carefully restored Boutique Hotel Adara on Alter Schulplatz, it is the first restaurant on the island in three decades to earn a Michelin star – a recognition awarded in 2024 for its high-quality cooking.
Chef de Cuisine Julian Karr grew up on the shores of Lake Constance, the son of renowned starred chef Rudolf Karr. He refined his craft at celebrated European addresses including Hotel Königshof, Schlosshotel Lerbach, and Vila Joya. Today, he brings that international precision back to his home region, where his cooking is rooted in local produce and clear, uncompromising execution.
KARRisma’s kitchen focuses on fresh, regional ingredients sourced as much as possible from nearby farmers and producers. The menu changes with the seasons; a recent five-course offering featured a dry-aged beef fillet with celeriac confit and dauphine potatoes, alongside a delicate char with cauliflower purée and shellfish foam. A Bregenz Festival special adds a three-course menu timed to the summer opera season.
The dining room is deliberately unpretentious. Julian Karr does not stay behind the stove – he moves through the space, speaking with guests, embodying the restaurant’s philosophy of honest hospitality. The atmosphere is one of personal warmth, where the team’s attention to detail feels natural rather than staged.
Behind the scenes, the Karr family remains central. Irene Karr and Rudolf Karr support operations, while a motivated brigade works in close harmony. The result is a restaurant that feels less like a formal institution and more like a place of genuine encounter – where the food speaks for itself, and the welcome is as memorable as the cooking.
