The story
In the quiet countryside near Lindau, surrounded by fruit orchards, the Fischer family runs VILLINO – a boutique hotel and restaurant that has been in their hands since 1992. The place feels personal: a toscana-modern villa with a sprawling 12,000 square metre park, where the garden is as much a part of the experience as the dining room. The warm, unpretentious hospitality that Sonja and Alisa Fischer bring carries through every detail, from the soft lighting to the fine porcelain.
Chef de Cuisine Toni Neumann’s cooking is a thoughtful fusion of Asian aromas and Italian tradition, made with many products from the Lake Constance region. The menus change regularly, but the approach is consistent: precise, flavour-driven, and never overwrought. A recent menu, Cucina della Passione, includes dishes like Seesaibling (lake char) with Chinese cabbage and KimChi broth, or lamb back with Parmigiana and olive. There is also a vegetarian Cucina Naturale menu, and a Villino Tradizionale that opens with an Asian appetiser variation and moves through Périgord truffle, beef fillet, and Valrhona chocolate soufflé.
The Michelin Guide has awarded the restaurant one star since 1998, and the Gault Millau gives 16 points. The recognition honours the balance Neumann strikes: the kitchen is ambitious, yet the service remains relaxed and attentive. Rainer Hörmann, Sonja’s brother and a veteran maître-sommelier with over 30 years in fine dining, pairs each dish with wines from a cellar that is both deep and international.
Dinner is served from 18:00, and the focus is on complete menus – the Cucina della Passione runs 188 euros per person. The restaurant is closed Sundays and Mondays, with additional breaks throughout the year. The setting feels secluded, yet the town of Lindau and the lake are just minutes away. For those who stay overnight, the 21 rooms and suites continue the same calm, elegant style, with views into the garden.
VILLINO is not about grand gestures. It is about the quiet confidence of a family that has been doing this for three decades, and a chef who earned his first star by staying true to his own fusion of Asian and modern European cuisines.
