The story

Steins Traube in Mainz – Michelin-Starred Classic Cuisine & Family Tradition

Steins Traube in Mainz

In the heart of Mainz-Finthen, Steins Traube has been a family affair for over 110 years. The restaurant’s story begins around 1870, and since 1906, the Stein family has guided its evolution from a simple pub to a destination for refined dining. Today, the baton is held by Philipp and Alina Stein, who took over from Philipp’s parents in 2019. The couple has brought fresh energy, overseeing a refurbishment that balances modern elegance with the warmth of cherished tradition.

The atmosphere reflects this duality: guests can choose between an elegant à la carte area or a cosy winter garden. The kitchen, led by Philipp Stein, focuses on classic cuisine, refined and precise. His training in award-winning kitchens like the Tantris in Munich and the Ente in Wiesbaden is evident in the careful, sophisticated approach to each dish. The restaurant’s commitment to high quality has been recognized with a Michelin star, a testament to its consistent excellence.

The wine list is equally well-considered, a natural complement to the food. Steins Traube also offers outdoor seating for warmer months and benefits from its own parking. The restaurant’s long history, combined with the current generation’s dedication, creates a dining experience that feels both established and fresh.

Concept Contemporary gourmet cuisine in a stylish restaurant. Philipp Stein is the sixth generation of his family to work at the stove and offers two menus alongside à la carte dishes. Culinary Style Stein's style is French-inspired, yet unpretentious and straightforward. The ambitious chef favors an unadorned, aromatic focus on the ingredients. A true taste masterpiece is the corn hen roulade, served with butternut squash purée and truffle jus. The Asian influence is successfully executed with yellowtail mackerel sashimi, while the galantine of marinated Alsatian goose liver is classically French. Wine Those who love wines from Rheinhessen will find every renowned label here – and of course, selections from international wine regions. Atmosphere The bright, welcoming interior complements the warm hospitality of the entire team. Conclusion A small culinary paradise in the suburb of Finthen that is always worth a detour.
