The story

Le Comptoir 17: French Bistro in Mannheim – Michelin Recommended

A Parisian Bistro in Mannheim

Since December 2014, Le Comptoir 17 has been the address for French bistro cooking in Mannheim. Founders Gregor Ruppenthal and Maia Valente built the place around three words: convivialité, générosité, authenticité. The result is a dining room that feels both lively and unpretentious – a spot where guests sit elbow to elbow, sharing plates and conversation.

The kitchen draws heavily on products from the terroir. Seafood comes from Breton coastal fisheries, exclusively sourced from Nicolas Tanguy in La Trinité-sur-Mer. Butter is by Jean Yves Bordier of Saint-Malo. The bread, “Pain Marly”, is made in-house. This commitment to quality ingredients is at the heart of the French cuisine served here.

The Menu: Classic French with a Modern Hand

Dishes change with the season, but the menu always reads like a love letter to French bistro classics. Starters might include Breton oysters (fine de claire from Carnac), a fish soup with aioli and croûtons, or beef tartare cut with a knife, served with béarnaise-style mayonnaise and house fries. Mains range from braised beef cheek bourguignon with mushrooms and pommes dauphine to roasted lamb cutlets with ratatouille and olive jus. Desserts stay equally French: crème brûlée, homemade ice creams, and a cheese selection from Bordier.

For lunch, a daily plat du jour and a fixed menu offer a lighter, more spontaneous way to experience the kitchen. The restaurant also serves a “Menu du jour” that changes regularly.

Michelin Recognition

Le Comptoir 17 has been listed in the Michelin guide – a Recommended restaurant for 2026. The guide’s nod reflects the consistency and sincerity of the cooking. The team, led by Ruppenthal and chef Giuseppe Ballaro, works with a clear philosophy: let the ingredients speak, keep the welcome warm, and never compromise on generosity.
