The story
For over 150 years, the Stappen family’s living room has been a place for special moments. What began as a farmhouse in Korschenbroich has grown into a celebrated restaurant, now in its fifth generation. Carmen and Frajo Stappen took over in 1998, bringing together their experience in top hotels and kitchens—from Davos to Sylt. Their philosophy, as they describe it, is “die feine herzliche Art”: a fine and heartfelt way of practising hospitality. After extensive renovations, the restaurant reopened larger and more modern, yet still rooted in the same welcoming spirit.
The kitchen team works with regional and international influences, letting the quality of ingredients guide the menu. Seasonal produce from trusted local suppliers—such as apple juice from Streuobstwiesen and goat cheese from a nearby dairy—is paired with global techniques. The result is a cuisine that is both international and seasonal, with dishes like house-cured salmon with crispy potato pancakes, sous-vide pork belly with smoked cauliflower purée, or a lamb curry with creamy polenta. Even the table salt, Sylter Meersalz, is a nod to the couple’s time on the island. The menu changes regularly, offering three- or four-course tasting options as well as à la carte choices.
The Michelin inspectors have noted the consistent quality and warm atmosphere, awarding Gasthaus Stappen a Recommended distinction. The restaurant also appears in guides such as Der Feinschmecker, Falstaff, and the Slow Food Genussführer. Yet the family’s greatest pride remains the guests who return again and again, feeling at home in a place where tradition and modernity meet naturally. Whether for a relaxed dinner, a weekend breakfast, or a special event, the Stappen team ensures that every visit feels personal.
