Gasthof Ochsen in Müllheim-Feldberg – Michelin-Recommended Country Cooking

A Landgasthof with History

At the foot of the Blauen mountain, in the wine-growing village of Müllheim-Feldberg, the Gasthof Ochsen has been a fixture since 1763. The name has never changed, and the Adam-Eglin family now runs it in the seventh generation. The Eglin name itself traces back to 893, with crossed fish and stars on the family crest—a detail observant guests may still spot today.

Over the centuries, the innkeepers often worked a second trade alongside the gastronomy: farming, baking, or tending their own vineyards. Until about ten years ago, the Ochsen’s own wines were a point of pride, served in the house and sold beyond. Those vineyards are now leased, but the wines from these original plots can still be enjoyed at the table.

The guest list has included actor Curd Jürgens and his wife Margie Schmitz, photographed with the Ochsen’s host in the wine cellar. Nadja Tiller, Walter Giller, former German President Johannes Rau, handball coach Heiner Brand, and Heinz Rühmann all visited—Rühmann never left without a few bottles of the local wine.

Baden Cuisine at Its Best

The kitchen serves straightforward, hearty country cooking rooted in the Baden tradition. Expect well-prepared regional dishes, paired with wines from the family’s own former vineyards and other local producers. The menu changes with the seasons, but the focus remains on honest, flavorful fare that reflects the Markgräflerland terroir.

Michelin has recognized this consistency, awarding the Gasthof Ochsen a "Recommended" status for 2026. It is a quiet endorsement of quality in a setting that values tradition over trend.

Setting and Atmosphere

The inn is also a small hotel, with cozy guest rooms designed for longer stays and restorative rest. Surrounded by orchards and vineyards, it is an ideal base for hikes or bike tours through the Black Forest and the neighboring wine villages. The outdoor seating area invites guests to linger over a glass of wine or a meal in fine weather.

The atmosphere is unpretentious and warm—a true country inn where the focus is on good food, good wine, and genuine hospitality.
