The story
In the small Palatinate village of Neupotz, the Gehrlein family has been welcoming guests since 1970, when Ludwig Gehrlein and his wife Mathilde founded the restaurant. Today, son Martin Gehrlein runs the kitchen, and his cooking has earned the restaurant a Michelin Bib Gourmand for good quality, good value cooking.
Martin Gehrlein trained in the best kitchens around the world, learning from chefs whose passion for the craft shaped his own style. Back home in the Palatinate, he focuses on the best seasonal products, prepared with high craftsmanship. His cooking is product-driven and clear, built around regional ingredients. The result is country cooking with a refined touch, rooted in French technique and local tradition.
The restaurant is part of a small hospitality estate that also includes a guesthouse and a rustic Landhauskaffee. The atmosphere is informal and welcoming, with outdoor seating available. Dishes change with the season, reflecting what is fresh and available from nearby farms. This is not a place for elaborate flourishes, but for honest, well-executed food that lets the ingredients speak.
Gehrlein's Hardtwald has become a fixture in the southern Palatinate dining scene, known for its consistency and warmth. The Bib Gourmand recognition confirms what regulars already know: this is cooking of real quality, offered at a fair price, in a setting that feels like home.
