The story
Das Esszimmer brings a contemporary take on Italian cooking to Neustadt an der Weinstraße. Chef Thomas Manthey’s kitchen blends Italian traditions with international accents, creating dishes that are both creative and balanced, firmly rooted in the Mediterranean spirit. The restaurant’s refined yet relaxed atmosphere has earned it a Michelin Recommended distinction for 2026.
Manthey discovered his passion for cooking early, but completed his chef training at age 27 in Cologne under Christoph Paul. His career took him through the Palatinate to Vienna, where he worked as head chef in several restaurants. Since 2017, he has been realizing his vision of modern Italian cuisine at Das Esszimmer. He is supported by sous chef Matthias Seitz, whose experience ranges from Kaiserslautern to Turkey and Deidesheim, and restaurant manager Florian Reiß, who curates wine pairings to complement the menus. The team’s dedication is evident in the attentive, friendly service.
The menu changes regularly, with a particular highlight on Thursday evenings: a five-course tasting menu that explores Italian flavors in a "small and fine" format, priced at 58 euros per person. A vegetarian version is always available, reflecting the kitchen’s attention to different preferences. The restaurant also offers outdoor seating during warmer months, adding to the welcoming atmosphere. Special holiday menus, such as the four-course Easter menu, are also prepared.
With its focus on quality ingredients and genuine hospitality, Das Esszimmer offers a welcoming spot for Mediterranean-inspired dining in the Palatinate.
