The story
IU & ON is not just a restaurant; it is a piece of Nuremberg's culinary history. Run by the Harirak family, it stands as one of the oldest Thai restaurants in the world, having introduced authentic Thai cuisine to the city over five decades ago. The story began in 1972 when sister Pieroh, alongside partner Roland Kraus, opened a small bistro called Nid Noi in the heart of the old town. At a time when ingredients like galangal and kaffir lime were virtually unknown in Germany, they imported everything themselves to bring dishes such as Tom Yam Gung and Laab to local diners.
Today, the restaurant is helmed by the younger sisters, Iu and On, after whom it is named. They have moved the restaurant to the Johannis district, where it continues to thrive. Many loyal patrons have followed them to the new location, a testament to the enduring quality and warmth of the family's hospitality. The restaurant's long-standing reputation for excellence has earned it a spot in the Michelin guide, receiving a Recommendation for 2026.
The spirit of a family-run establishment is palpable at IU & ON. The atmosphere is welcoming and unpretentious, a place where the focus remains squarely on the food. The kitchen serves traditional Thai dishes, prepared with care and using the same dedication to authentic flavors that has defined the restaurant since its inception.
The menu features the classics that first won over Nuremberg decades ago. Diners can expect a refined and genuine exploration of Thai cuisine, from the heat of a well-balanced curry to the fresh, herbal notes of a perfect salad. The restaurant is open for dinner from Thursday to Sunday, with additional lunch service on weekends, offering a consistent and reliable experience for both new visitors and returning friends.
