The story
In the wine-growing village of Achkarren, part of Oberrotweil, Die Achkarrer Krone has been a landmark of hospitality for generations. The Schüßler family has run the inn since 1919, but the building’s gastronomic history reaches back to 1561. Today, Dani and Jürgen Schüßler welcome guests into an atmosphere that is pure, unpretentious Gasthaus warmth—creaking wooden floors, lead-crystal windows, and a sense of tradition that feels both timeless and alive.
The restaurant’s cooking is a confident expression of Baden cuisine, naturally touched by French influence. The kitchen works with seasonal, regional ingredients—wild game is a specialty, sourced from the Erwin-Dages-Jagd in the nearby Alsace. Jürgen Schüßler, a passionate hunter, oversees the wild dishes himself. The menu changes with the seasons: expect dishes like carpaccio of fellow deer with Parmesan and pumpkin, or a trio of pumpkin prepared three ways. The restaurant’s commitment to fresh, precise cooking has earned it a place in the Michelin guide, where it is listed as Recommended—a quiet nod to the quality that regulars have known for decades.
Guests can choose between the historic Winzerstube, with its low ceiling and intimate corners (the “Herrgottswinkel” table is a favourite), or the sheltered courtyard terrace beneath old olive trees in summer. The wine list is a deep dive into the Kaiserstuhl’s best: around 100 cork-finished bottles and open pours from the region’s top producers, alongside local spirits and craft beers. The Krone is also a hub for events—from the legendary Weinbertafel to seasonal themed dinners like Thai street food in winter or a five-course asparagus-and-wine menu in spring.
Die Achkarrer Krone is not chasing trends. It is a family-run inn that knows exactly what it is: a place for good food, good wine, and genuine hospitality. The Schüßler family’s fourth generation continues a tradition that has weathered centuries, and the Michelin recognition simply confirms what the locals already know. For anyone seeking the real taste of the Kaiserstuhl, this is the address.
