The story

Kesselhaus Osnabrück: Michelin-Star Modern Cuisine in Urban Fine Dining

Kesselhaus

In Osnabrück's former industrial quarter, Kesselhaus occupies a building that tells its own story. Exposed brickwork, tall sash windows, and a striking central "Center Table" of solid wood define the space. Comic art lines the walls; outside, a terrace wraps around the landmark brick chimney. This is the setting for what the restaurant calls "urban fine dining" – a phrase that captures both the loft ambience and the precision of what emerges from the kitchen.

Under chef Randy de Jong, the menu changes roughly every six weeks, drawing on international influences and built around tension-rich flavour combinations. The cooking is described by Der Feinschmecker magazine as "creative world cuisine" – think soft-shell crab with hazelnut and grapefruit, or skate wing with pear, onion and brown butter. Seasonal produce from predominantly regional suppliers forms the backbone. A seven-course menu might include smelt with cucumber, celery and yuzu; veal cheek with romaine and garlic; and deer with mushroom, pointed cabbage and pomegranate, finishing with Jivara 40% chocolate, blood orange and black sesame. A lunch menu is offered on Saturdays. A spring special, available Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday lunch, presents a separate, lighter sequence of dishes with a matched wine pairing.

Owner Thayarni Garthoff oversees the service, which the Michelin guide notes for its relaxed professionalism. The Michelin inspectors awarded the restaurant one star, recognising a kitchen of real finesse. That star sits naturally alongside the honest, unpretentious atmosphere of the room itself.

From the brick chimney to the plate, Kesselhaus is modern cuisine with a clear sense of place.

Culinary Style Chef Randy De Jong and his team embody a modern, open-minded culinary approach, skillfully accented with classical and international influences. The kitchen plates freshly caught Mediterranean sea bass with radish and ginger, juicy pike perch fillets enhanced with a hint of saffron, and perfectly seared venison, served with salsify and rosemary jus.
