The story
Established in 1888 and recently recognized with two spoons in the Schlemmer Atlas, Restaurant Zum Rittmeister sits directly on the water in Potsdam. The building has evolved from a simple agricultural tavern into a respected destination for Brandenburg-Prussian cuisine. Managing director Stefan Hänel continues this long lineage, which traces back through several family owners since the early twentieth century. Guests visit for the steady quality that earned them Host of the Year in the Havelland region last season.
The kitchen focuses on seasonal ingredients sourced from nearby farms to craft authentic regional German cooking. Signature preparations include Königsberger Klopse served in a rich vegetable broth alongside caper sauce, and tender pieces of entrecôte paired with homemade herb butter. During autumn, the menu highlights fresh chanterelles in creamy soups or alongside roasted partridge breast. Vegetarian options like mushroom strudel with buckwheat lentils show the same attention to detail as the meat courses.
Dining spills onto an idyllic beer garden shaded by mature chestnut trees, offering a relaxed counterpoint to the polished interior. The property operates its own brewery in the courtyard, producing Edel Pils, Schwarzbier, Hefeweizen, and Orange Ale to pair with the food. Whether settling into a table for lunch or enjoying a quiet evening drink, visitors experience a straightforward hospitality rooted in centuries of local tradition.
