The story
The Lumperhof in Ravensburg has been a destination for generations. First mentioned as Lumpentobel in 1461, it became a popular excursion spot for city dwellers seeking fresh air and simple fare. Today, Sabine Decker-Fischer and Jochen Fischer continue that tradition of hospitality, offering a cuisine that is both rooted in the region and open to influences from the Mediterranean, the Orient, and Asia. Their work has earned the Lumperhof a Michelin Recommended distinction, a recognition of their consistent quality and inventive approach to country cooking.
Sabine and Jochen met during their apprenticeship and later worked together at the Waldhorn in Ravensburg, where Jochen served as sous-chef to Albert Bouley, a chef who set new standards in German fine dining. That experience shaped Jochen’s style, which now combines classical technique with a light, creative touch. In 2004, they took over the Lumperhof from Sabine’s parents, making it their own. Their philosophy: respect for the history of the house, for the ingredients, and for the guests.
The menu changes regularly, always based on what is seasonal and available from local producers. The kitchen works with game from nearby forests, poultry from Oberschwaben, and vegetables and herbs from their own garden. Everything is made from scratch, including stocks and sauces. The style is country cooking at its best – hearty, honest, but with surprising accents. A sauerkraut dumpling with truffle hollandaise, a miso soup with homemade ramen and quail breast, or a dry-aged beef fillet with saffron potato purée and red wine figs show the range. The Lumperhof also offers vegetarian options like beet ravioli with ricotta and a chickpea medallion with mango hummus.
The setting is idyllic: a garden with a 190-year-old lime tree, a cozy interior with a tiled stove, and rooms that can host private events. The Lumperhof is a place to linger, whether for a festive meal or a quiet dinner. It is a family affair, with a team that takes pride in making guests feel at home.
The Lumperhof is listed in several guides, including Gault&Millau, Falstaff, and the Varta Guide. The Michelin Recommended award underscores the restaurant’s commitment to quality in its country cooking. Yet the team remains grounded, focused on what matters: good ingredients, careful preparation, and a warm welcome.
