The story
For three decades, the Koep family welcomed guests to Landhaus Drei Raben, a restaurant and café set in the quiet countryside of Rees am Rhein. Located directly opposite the marina on the Mahnensee lake, the establishment became a fixture for those seeking unhurried, heartfelt hospitality and honest cooking.
The restaurant’s name—"Three Ravens"—evokes the surrounding landscape. After 30 years of passion and dedication, owners Andreas and Margarete Koep have decided to close the doors on December 21, 2025, entering a well-earned retirement. The legacy of their country cooking, however, remains a fond memory for regulars and visitors alike.
The cuisine at Landhaus Drei Raben was rooted in the traditions of German country cooking, prepared with care and a clear respect for ingredients. The menu, available on their website, offered dishes that changed with the seasons. Starters included a chestnut soup with parsley oil, goat cheese with honey on colourful lentils, and a house-smoked stremel salmon with lime risotto. Main courses featured everything from a Thai curry of corn-fed chicken in coconut milk to grilled rib-eye steak from Angus beef with truffle butter and potato gratin. Vegetarian options, such as a gently cooked vegetable bouquet with mushrooms and potato gratin, were always present.
The kitchen’s approach was straightforward: let the ingredients speak. This philosophy earned the restaurant a Michelin Recommended distinction, a testament to the consistency and quality of its cooking.
The restaurant’s setting was as welcoming as its food. With outdoor seating overlooking the lake, it was a place for lingering lunches on Sundays and festive dinners on weekends. The interior was filled with timeless and antique furniture, tasteful decorations for every season, and a bookcase from the 19th century—details that gave the house its character.
As the Koep family prepares to close, they will auction the restaurant’s furnishings, including seating sets for the terrace and garden, Mediterranean plants, and kitchen utensils, on January 17 and 18, 2026. It is the final chapter for a place that, for 30 years, was a true home to both its hosts and its guests.
