The story
Storstad – Swedish for “big city” – is the philosophy of Anton and Anna Schmaus, the hosts behind this Regensburg address. For them, the big city is a state of mind, a game between the modern and the timeless, between home and distant horizons. The restaurant’s name reflects that tension: an urban energy balanced with rootedness in local ingredients and traditions.
Küchenchef Josef Weig leads the kitchen alongside Sous Chef Alexander Härtl. Together they create a constantly evolving menu that draws on seasonal produce and precise technique. Restaurantleiter Roman Baumgarten oversees the service, while Chef Sommelière Simone Eberhard curates a wine list that has earned the “Interesting Wine List” tag. The tag “Farm to Table” is not just a label here – dishes highlight vegetables, fish, and poultry sourced with care.
At lunch (Thursday to Saturday), guests can choose a three- or four-course menu. Recent dishes include cured char with tarragon and mustard velouté, flame-grilled pike-perch with watercress and pommes dauphine, and corn-fed chicken with papaya salad and peanut cream. A vegetarian lunch menu is always available – think braised carrot in curry broth, puntarelle with ricotta and pistachio, or roasted beetroot with rösti.
The dinner menu (Tuesday to Saturday) expands to five or seven courses. Highlights from the current lineup: Hamachi sashimi marinated in blood orange salt with kohlrabi and imperial caviar; European lobster with Pommery mustard sauce, horseradish, and banana; monkfish poached in chicken jus with blankette sauce and morel haché; and a fenchel raviolo filled with roasted fennel and kombu, served with a beurre blanc and quince gel. The menu changes with the season, but quail, truffle, and apple savarin with whisky sabayone often appear.
For those seeking a lighter introduction, Storstad offers MENÜTIÖS – a three-course selection from the larger menu, including still water and a small wine pairing, priced at 165 euros. It’s available Tuesday through Thursday and respects the “good intentions” of a lighter start to the year. Another thoughtful option is TWENÜ, a three-course dinner with aperitif, two wines, water, and coffee for 105 euros, designed for guests under 30. It’s a way to experience starred cooking without the full commitment.
The Michelin Guide awarded Storstad one star for “high quality cooking” in 2026. The inspectors noted the restaurant’s consistent execution and clear focus on seasonality. That recognition is woven into every detail, from the precision of the sauces to the rhythm of the service. The wine pairing is well-regarded, with options that include an alcohol-free version.
The setting is modern, with outdoor seating available. The kitchen’s approach is direct: let the ingredients lead. The team describes Storstad as “stern cuisine from young people for young people,” but the welcome extends to anyone curious about well-crafted, thoughtful food. Vegetarian options are always available, and vegan requests are accommodated with advance notice.
Storstad is a restaurant that knows what it is – a big city in miniature, serving plates that balance familiarity and surprise, right on Watmarkt 5 in old Regensburg.
