The story
Located in Reil along the Moselle valley, The Restaurant at Villa Melsheimer anchors a dining program built around German and French cooking. The kitchen operates under chef Dirk Melsheimer and draws inspiration from the surrounding countryside, sourcing beef from the Eifel hills and smoking fish directly from the Ahr river. This deliberate focus on local supply chains supports a sustainable model that recently secured a We’re Smart Green Guide rating.
Guests frequently order the locally caught perch or the rich combination of crayfish paired with premium cuts of Eifel beef. The kitchen also prepares a dedicated Reil menu centered around a traditional pot roast known as Sauerbraten, which transforms local meat through a careful vinegar and spice marinade. These plates reflect a straightforward approach to regional cuisine that shifts with the seasons rather than following rigid international trends.
The dining rooms and glass conservatory face the Moselle River, offering uninterrupted sightlines across to the terraced vineyards on the opposite bank. Visitors often extend their meals onto the sunlit riverside terrace, where they can watch harvest crews work while sipping regional white wines. A separate rock garden features a hundred year old walnut tree and rose borders for those preferring a quieter setting. The entire space retains the refined proportions of its early twentieth century architectural origins.
