The story
Merzbacher Hof anchors a quiet plot in the wooded district of Merzbach, Rheinbach, serving fresh German cooking since 1912. Thomas Kann manages daily operations after assuming control of the property in 1997. The current kitchen team works within a structure that has remained under family stewardship across four generations. That continuous lineage explains why locals treat this venue as a reliable neighborhood anchor rather than a fleeting trend.
The kitchen prepares traditional German cooking alongside carefully selected international plates. Regular guests often book the rump steak from horse meat well in advance to guarantee availability. A rotating supplementary card highlights regional vegetables and local harvests throughout the warmer months. This commitment to straightforward ingredients recently earned the kitchen a 1.5 spoon rating from the Schlemmer Atlas.
Interior updates replaced heavy wood paneling with clean surfaces and brighter lighting schemes. Patrons fill these updated dining rooms through autumn until the rear courtyard opens for summer service. The shaded beer garden holds seventy standing and seated spots where guests enjoy freshly tapped Pils and Kölsch alongside curated wine selections. A dedicated event hall completes the layout for larger private functions.
