The story
The Gasthof Alpenrose in Grainbach, a village near Rosenheim, is a true family enterprise. Maria Wörndl built it up, Maria Lerche carried it forward, and now Florian Lerche is the chef. The building itself was mentioned as a tavern as early as 1565, and the family has owned it since 1868 — now in its fifth generation. This history is tangible in the characterful house, set right next to the church, and in the inviting beer garden.
Florian Lerche learned his craft in Styria, Austria, and that influence is clear. The kitchen describes its style as "Bavarian-Styrian," a refined take on country cooking that changes with the seasons. The menu is built around fresh, local produce, and a daily specials board ensures variety. Dishes like the roasted pork shoulder from straw-fed pigs with bread dumplings, or the pike-perch fillet with sweet potato purée, show a kitchen that respects tradition while looking for the right detail. A well-stocked wine cellar, with bottles from Styrian Schilcher to young Rheingau wines, completes the experience.
The Michelin guide has awarded the Gasthof Alpenrose a Bib Gourmand, a distinction for good quality, good value cooking. It is a fitting recognition for a restaurant that serves honest, well-executed food in a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere — whether you sit in the dining room, on the terrace, or under the trees in the beer garden on a mild summer evening.
